NATO in Afghanistan
After the September 11, 2001 attacks in the US, the UN Security Council decided to deploy the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to Afghanistan.
In August 2003, ISAF leadership was transferred to NATO.
In December 2014, the ISAF mission ended and NATO launched its Resolute Support mission.
Its started goal were to strengthen the authority of a legitimate government, to help combat Al-Qaida and the Taliban movement.
During NATO’s presence in Afghanistan, more than 32,000 civilians became victims of hostilities.
Overall, more than $700 billion was spent on the war in Afghanistan.
Kabul controls less than 55% of the country’s territory.
Because of the fighting more than 2.5 million Afghans have fled the country.
The level of corruption has increased several times.
There is practically no industry in the country as well as a shortage of food and medicine.
On the other hand, the production and export of opium increased 40 times.
The NATO operation has led to a significant degradation of the situation in Afghanistan in all areas.
